Brazilian Maritime Museum
Navigations are not only vectors of urban development, but also reservoirs of imagination and intrigue, as they constitute a fundamental way for different cultures and natures to meet.
It is with this North that we approach the preliminary project for the Maritime Museum of Brazil, a “common space” of many stories that seeks to be less for the ships and more for the sailors. And that reveals hospitality and intrigue with the Other, as well as the necessary and tense socio-environmental coexistence with the city of Rio de Janeiro.
The site where the MMB will be built can be understood through two distinct spatialities, namely: that of a square on the mainland, short and wide, and that of a pier, long and narrow. The spatial difference between the two requires different and complementary design responses, where on the mainland there will be a vertical building and on the pier a horizontal building.
